Floor sensors: the nursing-home veteran

Pressure-sensing mats and under-floor systems feel the impact of a body reaching the ground. They are proven in care facilities, especially beside beds, and completely private. The limits: they only know about the floor they cover, retrofitting a whole home is expensive, and a slow slide that ends with someone sitting against a wall may never register as an impact at all.

Acoustic and vibration systems: promising, younger

These listen for the signature thud-and-silence of a fall through microphones or structural vibration. No image, decent room coverage, and some clever engineering. But distinguishing a falling person from a falling bookshelf remains a hard problem, and microphones raise their own version of the privacy question.
